Moon Musings - January

Just like moons and like suns
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still, I’ll rise.
— excerpted from the poem "And Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou

A brand new year rises before us all, and it offers fresh promise and possibility springing high. We have new opportunities to align our purpose and our habits, nurture our relationships, and make or deepen connections.

Here at Moon over Water Gallery, we value these connections deeply. Our charming seaside gallery nestles among a vibrant art community, and we have loved getting to know our neighbors here on historic South Austin Street. The group of artists who are represented in our gallery have formed an enduring and affirming connection with each other, cheering each other on and providing a vital creative connection that gives our gallery its unique magic. Finally, we believe that the connection between the artists and the art is as vital as the certainty of the tides, and art collectors know this intuitively and value it.

Building your art collection begins with that connection. It’s our ultimate joy to facilitate that connection. We have a wide variety of one-of-a-kind pieces made by passionate artists whose work showcases a delightful myriad of techniques. Come see us as this new year rises. You’ll see what we mean.

Speaking of our Moon Over Water Gallery artists, we want you to get to know them better. In this rising new year, we want to deepen your connection with our potters - Linda Frank, Chris Dawson, Susan Myers, and Vivian Rood.

Linda Frank

I started my artistic journey later in life. I mostly make wheel-thrown, functional pottery but venture into hand building, too. My greatest joy is trying different glazes and glaze combinations to create one-of-a-kind pieces that can enrich their user’s everyday life. Opening the kiln to see what the kiln gods delivered is always a special occasion!

Chris Dawson

I find the most satisfaction in hand building. This form of pottery provides plenty of challenges that I embrace. It offers more of a creative outlet for me than the wheel. One of my favorite things is adding dimensions and interest in the clay by utilizing textures. Finding unique items to press into the clay is half the fun!

Susan Myers

I think what fascinates me the most about working with clay is that the processes haven’t changed much throughout the history of man. I’m creating pottery the same way my ancestors did thousands of years ago. And to think you are literally turning mud into something that can theoretically last for centuries is profound to me.

Vivian Rood

I love playing in the mud and the unpredictability of fire, and raku pottery is the perfect path for anyone who loves the unknown. Each piece is unique, a treasure, and unreproducible. The raku firings have always provided me with exciting results. My path is of mud and fire, of potter, the clay, and the unknown.
